As a huge Anime fan, I am guilty of enjoying the Reverse Harem genre. This type of genre is when the main female character is the love interest of more than three male characters. The reverse harem genre is just as popular as the Harem genre (main male lead is the love interest of the female characters). There are many different anime series and movies based on this genre. I have a few personal favourites.
Fruits Basket (5 July, 2001)
Fruits Basket is a classic based on the manga with the same title. The anime was released on 5 July, 2001, and concluded on 27 December, 2001, with 26 episodes. The story is about a curse placed on the Sohma family, who turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac when hugged by the opposite gender! The main female protagonist, Tohru Honda discovers this as she ends up staying with them. She is soon to discover that there is a dark history involving the Sohma clan. The anime is filled with drama, comedy, fantasy, and secrets.
Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge (The Wallflower) (4 October, 2006)
This anime is also called, ‘The Wallflower‘. It was first aired on 4 October, 2006, and consists of 25 episodes. The artwork is quite different in my opinion, as it seemed to be darker, but that fits the story concept. The main character Sunako Nakahara has a morbid fascination with dark things such as: horror movies, coffins and blood. However, as the story unfolds, you learn why that is. Her aunt sends her to live in her extravagant mansion along with four unbelievably handsome boys. It is now their mission to make Sunako into a refined lady!
Hakuouki (4 April, 2010)
I adore historical themed anime and the Hakuouki series is just that! It’s based on Otome game of the same name. The story centres around female character, Chizuru Yukimura, who is searching for her missing father. Whilst in Kyoto, she is hiding in disguise and witnesses something horrific – the murder of the Ronin, by none other than the Shinsengumi. This results in her being taken away to their headquarters. However, when learning of her identity, the members decide to keep her safe. Throughout the anime, the main focus is the political tensions in Kyoto, and along with that, many secrets are revealed. As well as 3 main series, there have been a few movies and OVA‘s of this anime.
I recommend some of the other reverse harem series I’ve watched too.
Hanasakeru (5 April, 2009)
Amnesia (7 January, 2013)
Angelique (17 March, 2004)
Koisuru Tenshi Angelique: Kokoro no Mezameru Toki (8 July, 2006)
Neo Angelique Abyss (7 April, 2008)
Ouran Koukou Host Club (5 April, 2006)
Alice in the Country of Hearts: Wonderful Wonder World (30 July, 2011)
Unlike the others, this is a movie, not a series. But similar to ‘Amnesia‘ and the ‘Hakuouki’ series, this is also based on an Otome game. I love ‘Alice in Wonderland’; so when I found out about this anime movie, I had to watch it.
Have you watched any of these anime series? Or how about, ‘Heart no Kuni no Alice’? Do you have any favourites of your own you would like to share? Please comment and let us know!
