Sazae-san

There are countless popular Anime series that have a large number of episodes. For example, ‘Bleach‘, has a total of 366 episodes. The show first aired on 5 October, 2004, and concluded on 27 March, 2014. Another popular anime, ‘Naruto‘, first episode released on 3 October, 2002, and was 720 episodes long. The show ended on 31 March, 2017.

However, there is one anime series in particular that beats all animes in having the longest run. The show is called, ‘Sazae-san‘ – based on the Manga with the same name; which consists of approximately 45 volumes, and ran from 22 April, 1946, up until, 21 February, 1974. The series was written and illustrated by one of the first female manga artists, Machiko Hasegawa. ‘Sazae-san’ focuses on a woman named Sazae, who rejected gender roles. She didn’t care for wearing makeup and dressing up to find a husband. Instead, she much preferred spending time with her horse! Although, when she did eventually get married, she was the one ‘wearing the trousers in the household‘ – which the neighbours didn’t exactly approve of. Overall, the story is full of fun as you read and watch the character dynamics, that focuses on Sazae and her large family.

The first episode of the anime was released on 5 October, 1969 – and the show is still ongoing! And to top that, it holds 2 Guinness World Records!

  1. The longest-running animated TV series (with a whopping 7542+ episodes)
  2. The longest-running scripted TV series in history

There are other popular anime series that also have a large number of episodes. For example, ‘One Piece‘ (839 episodes), ‘Detective Conan‘ (903 episodes), and ‘Gintama‘ (353 episodes) – all which are still ongoing at the moment. Yet, ‘Sazae-san’ most definitely hits the bar for the longest-running anime!
