Shrine Curse

Hey there guys! Kennie here and today I will talk about a Japanese superstition that you can curse someone by visiting a shrine.

Some of you may already be familiar with this method, but it is said that if you perform the ceremony Ushi no Koku Mairi you can curse someone. This is a ceremony where you visit a shrine at “the hour of the ox,” the hours of 1:00 AM-3:00 PM. You would take with you a straw doll, known as a Waranigyou, and a long nail, known as a Gosunkugi. You would nail the doll to the shrines holy tree and wherever the nail is in the doll, is where the person you curse is going to feel pain for seven days. You want to be careful not to be seen while you’re doing it though or the curse will reverse and fall on you instead.

Have you guys heard of this curse before? let us know in the comments below your thoughts on this superstition!
