Inspiration from Siwon

Siwon is someone who has inspired me from day one.  I want to share with you some of his word that have gotten me through the rough times in my life.

Siwon is a Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF Korea and UNICEF is an organization that is very near and dear to my heart.  Growing up, I had a lot of problems with the girls I went to school with.  They didn’t like me and made sure I knew it every chance they got.  They belittled me and did everything they could to stomp me into the ground; I can’t even tell you how many times I heard that no one could ever like me, that I was weird and pathetic, that I would never make it, never make anything of myself… day it even got physical.

The school I went to didn’t really handle bullying overly well so I learned to internalize and deal with everything myself.  Most of the time this would end up with me in tears as soon as I was by myself, trying desperately to understand what was so wrong with me that nobody liked me.  I hid parts of myself away in a stupid effort to get somebody, anybody, to like me just once.  I can’t tell you how much Siwon’s words would’ve meant to me back then, or how much they touch me now.  Knowing that someone cares, even if I don’t know them personally, is the biggest light in the darkness and hearing “You are a precious person” touches my soul so deeply.

I think most times it is a lot easier to listen to those who would rather tear you down and doubt you than to the people who build you up and sincerely wish for your success and happiness.  Once you get it into your head that you’re a failure, every mistake or hurdle after that will just convince you that you’re no good or you can’t do it.  But as Siwon says, if you work hard at something there are no limits.  The only limits you have are the ones you’re putting on yourself; you’re your own worst enemy.

You can do anything as long as you dig deep and believe in yourself.  Even though you may stumble or you may lose your way, keep trying and never stop moving forward.  One day you’ll achieve your goals but you can’t give up on yourself.  This is really important to me because no matter how hard things get, I will not let anyone else set my limits or my boundaries.  I can do anything I want as long as I have the grit and determination to go after it.
When one door closes, another one opens.  This is something my parents said to me a lot.  Throughout high school and college, I had a lot of dreams and ambitions that never seemed to work out for me; a lot of doors closed in my face, some of which took me awhile to get over.  I was too focused on the ‘what could have beens’ that I couldn’t see the ‘what could bes’ right in front of my nose.

Siwon’s words really struck me because he’s 100% right.  The more we focus on the things that didn’t work out, the more we’ll ignore the windows of opportunity that are opening right in front of us.  It’s definitely something I’ve been guilty of, as I’m sure a lot of you have been as well.  It’s natural to be disappointed when something you had invested so much of yourself into doesn’t work out, but it’s what you do after that’s important.  Don’t focus on the past; take your disappointment and use it to fuel your determination and desire for your future.

And finally…..don’t let the opinions of others make you lose yourself.  Don’t be afraid of failing; it’s just a learning experience.  You’ll never know what works if you don’t find half a dozen things that didn’t.  There is no shame in failing……only in being too afraid of failing again to even try.  Don’t waste your life being too afraid to put yourself out there and try something new.  Should you fail, you’ve learned something new about yourself and you know in the future what is a good idea and what is not. But if you succeed, you can be proud of taking that step to try something exciting and different.

Siwon is an extraordinarily inspirational man.  He gives me strength every day to strive towards my future without faltering and to try to be the best version of myself that I can.  Some days are great, some are more of a challenge, but I always know that somewhere on this planet there is at least one person praying for me and cheering me on as I live my best life.  And let me tell you….in my darkest moments, there’s nothing more beautiful than knowing that someone believes in everything I could be.
