It’s been two years since Jonghyun has passed and I’m still reeling. 24 months and I still can’t believe he’s gone. Sometimes at night I’ll find myself wondering what new music he would have released, what Instagram posts he would’ve made, what shenanigans he’d be getting into with his members. The past two years have been rough but today, on this anniversary, I want to reminisce and remember.
No one can deny that Jonghyun had one of the most distinctive voices in the industry. He was such a passionate artist and his emotions really shone through in his tone. With just a few notes, he could evoke a well of emotions in his listeners.
Not only was he a talented singer, but he also wrote and produced a variety of songs. Beginning in 2009 with ‘Juliette’, Jonghyun kicked off his career as a songwriter. Throughout the next few years, he would go on to write and compose songs for artists like IU, Son Dam-bi, EXO, and bandmate Taemin.
Jonghyun was also a part of several collaborations with SM the Ballad and he leant his beautiful vocals to ‘Let’s Go’, the song that promoted the 2010 G-20 Seoul Summit. He also performed one of my absolute favorite covers of Bohemian Rhapsody with Changmin, Joonsu, Yoseob, and Jungmo.
Even though it’s been two years, it only seems like a blink of an eye. Not a day goes by that Jonghyun isn’t missed and it is my deepest desire that he is without pain and feeling unimaginable happiness now. Heaven gained another angel but Jonghyun is still alive in his friends, his family, and us…..his beloved fans.
Rest easy Jonghyun. You did well
