jason chu is a solo artist and member of NITEMRKT based in Los Angeles. His songs have been featured in Netflix series Wu-Assassins and seasons 1 and 2 of Cinemax series Warrior. He’s spoken at universities like Stanford, ArtCenter College of Design, Yale, and many others and jason has presented at the Getty Center, Flushing Town Hall, Nate Holden Performing Arts Center, and the Museum of Chinese in America. On June 5th, jason’s new album living.room was released and I was completely blown away.
The album began in early 2019 as jason helped move his family out of their long-time home and continued through the global COVID pandemic. Listening to the songs, I really felt like I was on a journey and I felt such a deep connection to jason through his lyrics and the soft melodies. I could almost see in my mind a road trip full of nostalgia as a childhood home is left behind for the last time and a new chapter is started in busy LA.
My favourite song on living.room is hands down “GBTD”. Featuring Romellus Wilson, Chance Calloway, Leo Xia, and Samantha Shen, this song just reaches in and touches my soul. It’s such a wholesome look into jason’s life and I can’t help but to smile and sway along with the beat every time I listen to it. Romellus, Chance, Leo and Samantha all really complement jason’s voice and I definitely can’t imagine anyone else better suited to feature in this.
Another favourite of mine is “Dumplings” I’ve always had a soft spot for the more conversational type songs. “Dumplings” almost reminded me of “Ragged Old Flag” because I got the same chills from both songs. As soon as the song opened, I knew it was going to hit me, and hit me it did. The lyrics are so raw and genuine, something I found myself wholly unprepared for. I quickly found myself focusing on this song almost more than the others.
Do you ever listen to an album and think to yourself: ‘this is going to be something truly special’? It doesn’t happen to me very often, in fact, I could probably count on one hand the albums who have stuck with me so completely. Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Eric Nam’s Honestly. Babylon’s Caelo. Billy Joel’s The Stranger. Now I’m happy to add jason’s living.room to this list!
Living.room is so beautiful and soothing. It evokes a great desire in me to curl up with a fluffy blanket and a cup of tea and just exist for awhile. It’s a reminder to slow down and just let myself feel for a little bit. The whole album has a calming effect for me and it’s truly a work of art. I’m so excited to get my physical copy and see what this bonus track has in store for me.
