Hwarang ran from December 2016 to February 2017 for 20 episodes with 4 special episodes. The drama follows a group of young men, known collectively as “Hwarang”, brought together by the regent of the Kingdom of Silla. This group of young men discover their passions, and even some secrets, in the turmoil the Kingdom is experiencing.
Park Seo-Joon, Go Ara, and Park Hyung-sik make up the cast of main characters and the supporting cast is full of familiar faces such as SHINee’s Minho, HALO’s Ooon, Lee Kwang-soo, and BTS’ Taehyung. Despite the star studded lineup, Hwarang was widely regarded as a flop and only averaged an audience rating of 8.4%. It was heavily criticized for its distracted storytelling, inappropriate use of background music, and unnatural acting by the lead actors.
Taehyung starred as Suk Han-sung, the youngest hwarang. Much like in real life, Suk Han-sung has an extremely bright and warm personality. He gets along well and is the innocent of the group. However, he carries a large burden as the last jin-gol of the Wolseong clan.
